Shuart Van Orden House

Built in 1740 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995 (after being saved from
ruin by its owners and stewards during the 1980s), this home seamlessly blends old with new.

Once a 1000-acre farm with lands deeded from King George, it is now a pastoral family compound with a pond and several outbuildings, including the original stone granary, a restored barn and an early-1900s barn.

Recent improvements include geothermal heating & cooling, updated plumbing & electrical systems, cedar privacy fencing with an automated driveway gate, and extensive restoration of the grounds. The neglected stone granary was transformed into a dining pavilion with perennial gardens. The overgrown pond, stripped of invasive species, is now home to native plants that provide visual variety throughout the seasons. Modern amenities extend to the 1800s horse barn, which now houses a professional movie theater in the old hayloft and a home office with kitchenette, bathroom and guest space on the lower level, which was originally a tack room and stables.
